Salt water in the blood: Jon Sanders

He has been on the "Perie Banou II", an S&S 39 from 1971, for 455 days since it set off on November 3, 2019. Unlike his compatriot Bill Hatfield, who even completed a non-stop lap around the globe in 2020 at the age of 81, Sanders circumnavigated the globe in stages.

The route: From Fremantle on Australia's west coast, Sanders sailed westward viden the Panama Canal around the world

After starting in Fremantle near Perth, he sailed west across the Indian Ocean, then across the South Atlantic and through the Panama Canal into the Pacific. The long stage across the Pacific Ocean was followed by a stop in Tahiti. From there, Sanders returned to Australia for the final blow in autumn 2020, where he reached Bundaberg in October. Now the last stage is also in the wake.

Three times non-stop

In the logbooks of the Australian, however, there were already numerous notable trips, including some first achievements, before this trip. The exceptional skipper had sailed around the world ten times before, three times non-stop in a row.

Sanders spent almost two consecutive years at sea from 1986 to 1988, covering around 71,000 nautical miles without a break - a distance that no one has ever exceeded. At that time he already had experience of being alone at sea: Before that, he had sailed all around twice in a row.

Against the wind

Besides Wilfried Erdmann and six others, Jon Sanders is one of the few skippers who have a non-stop circumnavigation of the world against the wind in their wake: In 1987 he sailed around the world with the "Perry Endeavor" in 250 days during his triple circumnavigation.

At the beginning of 2020 Jon Sanders received the "Lifetime Award" from the Ocean Cruising Club for his exceptional achievements.

Fight against marine pollution

Sanders also undertook his most recent trip around the world to set an example against the catastrophic pollution of the seas. On the way he took 214 water samples, which are now being examined for microplastics.
