The prerequisites for this were extremely poor: small budget, little experience and a boat that was twice as heavy as planned due to errors in the implementation of the design specifications. Nevertheless: Alec Rose from Canterbury was only the second Englishman to circumnavigate the globe in 1968 after Francis Chichester, albeit in stages. It took him 354 days, a whole 128 days longer than Chichester. The credo of the greengrocer who was ennobled after the tour just like his predecessor: Anyone can learn and practice deep sea sailing.
After Rose's death in 1992, his "Lively Lady", who was only eleven meters long, was threatened with decay. His hometown Portsmouth took over the boat and, in the spirit of her popular owner, used it as an integration measure for sailing training for disadvantaged young people.
