The authority AADE, which is responsible for collecting the recreational craft tax, has finally explained to the English Cruising Association and the cruiser department of the DSV how the fee (TEPAI) should be paid. For this, the owners have to go to the port authority in person at the start of the season or when entering Greece and have a form filled out to pay the tax. An agent can also be hired, but a power of attorney must be issued in Greek.

With the form you have to go to a local Greek bank branch and deposit the money. The bank confirms this on the form. The owner then has to take it back to the port office. An online transfer or payment through a website with a credit card, as advertised, is currently not possible, and no start date could be given. All in all a very unfortunate solution, if you want to pay the fee on weekends, public holidays or after bank counters have closed, you have to wait until Monday in the worst case. For this reason, the Kauch are demanding that the Greeks postpone the deposit until an online deposit is possible.

The only way to avoid the tax is to put the boat on land and not use it. However, this also involves dealing with the authorities: an application must be made to the Port Police, and the ship's documents must be deposited there for the duration of the non-use. A regulation that some owners may not be comfortable with. In order to moderate the rush of owners at the start and end of the season, at least the port operator K&G Marinas, which operates the ports of Gouvia, Lefkas, Kalamata, and Zeb, has reached a settlement with the local Port Police forces. There the owners can deposit their papers in the marin if they have given the marina a corresponding authorization beforehand. Owners should discuss this with the Marina Office staff.
