GETTING THERE Flights from some German airports to Volos in the north of the gulf of the same name or to Skiathos. The latter connection changes relatively frequently and was not last made on Saturday. Some fleet operators have adapted to this and also offer handovers during the week. Depending on the season, the flights cost between 250 and 450 euros

CHARTER There are bases on the mainland in Volos in the Gulf of Volos and Skiathos on the island of the same name, as well as a smaller base on Skopelos. Volos has the advantage of being close to the airport so that there is only a short transfer. If the crew wants to start from Skiathos and cannot find a company that also offers the takeover of yachts during the week, a long, several-hour car and ferry transfer from Volos to Skopelos has to be accepted. The same applies to Skopelos, which cannot be reached directly from Germany. If you start from Volos, you won't be able to manage all of the islands in one charter week, probably only Skiathos and Skopelos. If you want to see the islands further out, you should charter two weeks from Volos or start from Skiathos

Weather statistics Sporades

WIND AND WEATHER The Sporades are an area influenced by the Meltemi, even if the wind is significantly weaker here than further south in the Aegean, more around 3 to 4 Beaufort in summer than the 5 to 6 in the Aegean on average. The wind blows mainly from north to northeast. Moving heat lows can cause a swell on the south side of the islands that reaches some bays and makes them restless. In the Trikeri Canal, jet effects from east to west, yachts usually have to cross to Skiathos; in the afternoon it can be rough. Falling gusts can occasionally blow from the mountains in the Gulf of Volos and also from some parts of the islands

There are good weather and swell forecasts on the website of the Greek weather service Poseidon (www.poseidon.hcmr.gr) and the usual sources like Windy (www.windy.com) or Wind finder (www.windfinder.de) as well as their iOS and Android apps.

PORTS & ANCHORAGE Mostly city harbors or small jetties where you can moor Roman Catholic with bow anchor. In Volos and Skiathos also mooring lines. Not all ports are well protected, you have to reckon with some swell of ferries, for example in Skopelos or Skiathos. There are seldom sanitary facilities. Electricity partly on the jetties, water not always, tank trucks then come to the pier. Partly no or very little demurrage. There are plenty of anchor bays, but sometimes they are quite open and offer only moderate protection, but the bottom often holds up well

NAVIGATION & SEAT CREW Around the islands some shoals and little buoyancy, as is often the case in Greece. Some ports and anchorages are affected by the swell of fast ferries and motor boats. The requirements for the seal sanctuary around the islands of Alonissos, KyrPanagia, Skantzoura, Gioura, Piperi and Psathoura must be observed. Piperi and Giours are taboo for sailors. We recommend a visit to the national park administration and the exhibition of the nature conservation association MOM at the port of Patitiri on Alonissos. Click here for the park's websit

LITERATURE AND SEA MAPS M. Haselhorst and K. Dittmann, "Charter Guide Northern Sporades", 19.90 euros. R. Heikell, "Greek Coasts", 69.90 euros, both Edition Maritim, to be ordered at www.delius-klasing.de. Sea charts: The best material in terms of content are the Greek sports boat charts from Eagle Ray (24 euros), which also contain many port plans and photos. The British sports boat tickets from Imray (24.50 euros) are also used a lot

AREA CHARACTERISTICS SPORADES

If you want to experience one of the less developed Greek areas, which is also not overcrowded in many corners, the island archipelago of almost a dozen islands around Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos is exactly the right place. The Meltemi is not yet blowing here with the strength and sharpness that it attains further south in the Aegean Sea, and the islands, especially Skopelos, are covered in dense greenery and forest. Skiathos is a bit more touristy due to many British backpackers and package holidaymakers, but almost all other destinations are not overcrowded, even in summer. In addition, the island offers enough differences in terms of landscape as well as cities and villages: the further east you sail, the more lonely and quieter it becomes. Fishing villages like Steni Valauf Alonnisos with its quaint taverns directly at the harbor or Agnontas on Skopelos are like small escapes into a perfect island world.

On site you will encounter the typical Greek way of life with small villages with taverns and bars right on the water, the typical whitewashed houses and the nested town centers with the narrow streets, framed by bougainvillea, fig and olive trees. The area offers a pleasant alternation between just enough tourism and life in the villages that it doesn't get boring, and enough nature and space that you can relax at anchor. The Sporades are also very inexpensive, hardly any demurrage is charged, and restaurants and bars are cheaper than in Germany. The port infrastructure is very rudimentary, not a destination for spoiled crews who expect comfort, service and well-kept sanitary facilities.

However, not all islands are allowed to be visited everywhere: The Sporades are one of the most important retreats for the very rare monk seal and parts of the islands are therefore national parks and either completely closed or partially. The district doesn't really reduce this, there are enough alternatives.

A highlight is the lively Skiathos, which can also satisfy shoppers and party-goers and also offers enough chic anchorages in front of beaches, where you can swim and stop in the beach bars. The very green and mountainous Skopelos offers a beautiful coastline, and the main town on a mountain slope is a wonderful destination. Many know the place from the Hollywood musical "MammMia", which was filmed here.

Those who decide to start in the Gulf of Volos have about 35 nautical miles to get to the first island of Skiathos. The gulf is scenic, especially in the southern part, and offers some nice destinations. However, if you want to go to Alonnisos or further, you don't have much time on a weekly cruise. The port of departure therefore largely depends on the flight connection (see above) and how much time the crew has available. If you start in Volos and want to see the archipelago in all its diversity, you should charter two weeks.
