GETTING THERE
Want the crew on the mainland From Tropestarten, there are direct flights from various German airports to LameziTerme, for example with Eurowings (prices between 200 and 350 euros). From there, a transfer by car takes about an hour. Alternatively flights to Palermo in Sicily, but from there is the transfer to the Porto Roso base. for almost two and a half hours and costs around 250 euros each way.

CHARTER
The Fleet offer in the district is relatively limited, there are bases in Tropea or Reggio di Calabria on the mainland or on the north side of Sicily, something Portorosa. Not all fleets there are of convincing quality. It is best to book through a charter agency that is familiar with the providers. Most of the crews opt for the mainland bases, dder transfer clear shorter and is cheaper than in Sicily. Trope is also a pearl of the coast and is accordingly somewhat more popular as a port of departure. From there it is about 30 miles to the first island of Stromboli or about 40 miles to Panarea.

Weather statistics Aeolian Islands
WIND & WEATHER
In summer, the area is a light wind destination, often only a weak Tramontan blows from the northwest. The partly high islands provide a few reinforcements or covers. The very mountainous mainland opposite is notorious for local strong winds, especially in spring and autumn, especially at the wind nozzle near Messin between mainland and Sicily. Strong thunderstorms can form there; Storm gusts are not uncommon either, the crews of the Middle SeRace, which takes place every fall, can tell a song about them. You sail around Sicily in a long-distance regatta and in October you get caught in storms again and again.
NAVIGATION & SEAT CREW
Navigating the area is pretty easy, the steeply sloping former volcanic cones that most of the islands are, have only a few shoals. You can actually get to the next island almost always after sight drive. The area is right, however open and unprotected and offers very few anchorages and harbors protected from all wind directions. That is actually the biggest challenge, because if done right heavy weather, especially from the south, threatens, depending on the wind direction sometimes nothing else but remains Protection in the safe mainland harbors or look in the north of Sicily. However, such a port can always be reached in one day. In summer, however, such a weather development is clearly the exception. The shores of the coasts drop steeply in many places and there are also many stones on the bottom, that is Anchoring is not always easy. A lot of chain has to be put in place.
PORTS & ANCHORAGE
There is only two correct (and important) Marinas in the area, namely the port of Pignataro Lipari and the port of SantMariSalina on the island of Salina. They offer places on mooring lines or at the pier and offer modest comfort. Both are not recommended in strong southerly winds. Otherwise, Roman Catholic is moored to the pier with a mooring line. There are small jetties here and there, but they are often reserved for ferries, excursion boats or locals; the places are sometimes not easy to find either. The mooring fee per night for a 43-foot ship costs between 70 to 100 euros. In some places there are Buoy fieldswhose quality is not necessarily the very best. Pay attention to instructions in the area guide. Good and safe Anchoring areas in the area are rare, there are a few on Vulcano and Panarea, most of which are very good weather spots. Dim summer in the area there is often a light wind, that doesn't have to be a problem. However, one cannot expect perfect protection from the swell of ferries or other traffic.

AREA CHARACTERISTICS LIPARIAN ISLANDS
The specialty of this area is without question his volcanic imprint: Stromboli on the island of the same name is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, it is practically permanently active and occasionally erupts more strongly, most recently in 2019 with two sensational explosions. The resulting natural spectacle is impressive: In normal conditions, you can watch the mountain with a guide at the edge of the crater as the lava erupts; Sometimes spectacular masses of lava pour into the sea via the northern side of the slope, known as the fire slide, generating hissing masses of steam. Especially at night it is a spectacle that you will probably never forget in your life.
Volcanism also shapes the region in other ways: Vulcano has an old cone in the center that is still bubbling Sulfur gases emanatewhose vapors move across half the island. Anyone who wants to experience the elemental force of volcanoes is in the right place in this area. The history of the earth is particularly striking here: all islands are of volcanic origin, rise relatively steep, and the banks around them are correspondingly steep; with a lot of rock they are not ideal for anchoring. This is especially true for Stromboli and Salina.
Apart from that, the islands offer a lot of variety and nice ambience: The locations Lipari and SantMariauf Salina are pretty Old towns with flair, on the other islands there are small pretty villages. The main islands of Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panare and Stromboli are easy to see sail in a week. If you want to stay longer, you can sail out to the two somewhat remote but very pretty islands of Filicudi and Alicudi. The first trip amounts to just under 100 miles. If you also want to see the outer islands, you have to plan with about 140 nautical miles. Who early or late in the Pre- or post-season comes, it should be clear that you are with yourself deteriorating weather often has no choice but to sail back to the mainland or Sicily's north coast for protection. However, the routes can be done in half a day, and the goals are definitely worth it
A Tip for crews who want to climb Stromboli at night with a guide, a very rewarding, but also strenuous hike lasting several hours: if the volcano erupts, as it did twice in three months in 2019, the tours will be severely restricted or even stopped until the mountain calms down again. So if you come here primarily for this, you should inquire beforehand with the charter company on site or on the Internet.
