Hiddensee is often referred to as the "Sylt of the East". The comparison of the two islands actually reveals some similarities. First there would be the beach. While Sylt is famous for its on the North Sea, that of Hiddensee is probably one of the most beautiful in the Baltic Sea; the shallow water, crystal clear in easterly winds, plus the white color of the sand and its fine grain are unique. In addition, the location: Hiddensee, the breakwater of Rügen against west winds, extends in a north-south direction. The beach is on the west side, which guarantees a natural spectacle: Sunsets - at least as beautiful as those on Sylt.

And similar to Sylt, there is on Hiddensee with the Dornbusch a wooded elevation with a steep coast sloping into the sea, in the north of the island. There the lighthouse of the same name rises into the sky, the symbol of the island.

However, there is one big difference: Hiddensee is as good as car-free. The few motorized vehicles mostly belong to local companies or authorities, or they are used for local transport. Most of them are also electrified, like the small island bus that runs between Neuendorf and Kloster. Private status symbols on four wheels are banned from Hiddensee; just two horsepower are enough to get around. These are stretched in front of carriages, which handle the lion's share of the passenger and tourist transports.

However, the way to Hiddensee is not that easy. The approach to the four island ports of Kloster and Vitte as well as Lange Ort and Neuendorf is tough.
