Breathtaking vision: from the fortress Sveti Stefan you can see Kotor
Within just a few years, the still young nation, smaller than Schleswig-Holstein, virtually exploded. New marinas, gigantic projects, have emerged. New flight connections enable easy entry and the shortest possible routes to the most beautiful spots in the country. For sailors, a previously blank spot on the nautical chart has become a worthwhile holiday destination. In particular, thatMontenegro has a coastline that cannot be found anywhere else on the shores of the Mediterranean.
The only 50 nautical miles long outer coast to the Adriatic is atypical for the east side of the inlet. Unlike in northern Croatia, there are no offshore islands that offer protection. In addition, there are few bays where you can lie down safely overnight. On the contrary, the open Adriatic sends a lot of swell to the imposing, rugged rocky coast in onshore winds. The Dinaric Mountains rise here up to 1500 meters from the sea.
Nevertheless, it is worth exploring this stretch of coast, a few spots have the potential for lasting memories. The special thing about Montenegro, however, is the deep incision in the north: the Bay of Kotor, named after the historic city at its lowest point, is more of an inland area, similar to a Norwegian fjord. The steep mountain slopes all around and, depending on the position of the sun, lying in the shade with the dark pine forests gave the country its name: Monte negro - black mountains.
