The accident had already occurred on New Year's Eve afternoon in Argentina: On the second training day scheduled there in Buenos Aires, Susann Beucke fell so unhappy on the tree of her skiff and twisted her inwardly that she broke her right fibula (fibula). Luck in misfortune: it was a smooth break. Thanks to good contacts with the Argentine Olympic champion Santi Lange and his team, Susann Beucke was able to be operated on by a surgeon who was well known to Lange three hours after the accident. A permanently inserted plate has been helping the healing process ever since.

The initial grief over the low blow in the middle of the national Olympic qualification, which Lutz / Beucke have been leading since their furious appearance at the 2019 World Cup in Auckland and the fifth place they achieved there, has long since given way to the old fighting spirit. "I only howled like a castle dog for the first two days," remembers Beucke. According to the motto "Now more than ever", TinLutz and Susann Beucke have adapted their plans to the new situation and done everything humanly possible to ensure that the accident does not also thwart the duo's third attempt at the Olympics.

Despite the accident, the goal has not changed: TinLutz and Susann Beucke are fighting for the 49erFX ticket to the Enoshima Olympic regatta

While Susann Beucke from the Hanoverian Yacht Club was pushing ahead with her rehabilitation in Argentina, TinLutz from the Chiemsee Yacht Club rebuilt the program before the 2020 World Cup (part 2 of 3 of the Olympic qualification for the German 49erFX sailors), which began in Australia on February 10th, sounded out replacement crews and has been training on site with LottWiemers (formerly Görge) for almost a week. Susann Beucke, who also landed there today, attests: "Tinund Lottsegeln great together, have already won a few training races."

Sanni Beucke drives the healing process with iron discipline

After the initial frustration, Beucke herself drove her healing process forward impressively quickly in Argentina. The physiotherapist of Santi Lange's Olympic predecessor CeciliCarranzSaroli, who wants to bring this mission to a happy ending and will join the German FX team in Australia in a few days, also helped her. Beucke says: "I have had crutches for a week and will soon be able to stand on my toes again. That is much better than any prognosis." In the course of her recovery process, Beucke stuck her foot in an "ice shoe" for half a day, at night in a kind of magnetic tube that is supposed to stimulate the movement of ions in the body.

In the meantime she has already done two small sailing trips (still in Argentina). An up-to-date X-ray image on February 3rd should give precise information about how many "bridges" the bone was able to build and whether Beucke might already be ready for the World Cup. Typically, experts believe that it takes six to eight weeks for such a fracture to heal. But it can also go faster with young, well-trained competitive athletes and intensive and positive processes. "I am continuing with my intensive rehab program. The orthopedic surgeon will say on February 3rd whether I can sail or not. We will decide that without emotion."

And so they would like to be back in action together soon: TinLutz and Susann Beucke

Until then, Sanni Beucke wants to support, fight and hope for her team in Australia. "In the past few weeks, Tin managed the campaign completely on my own, so that I could focus one hundred percent on the healing. That was a great challenge for us as athletes and as people. I think we grew up with this task as a team. It was It was a real shock at the beginning and we struggled, but are now back on track. Our big goal is six months away."

In the national Olympic qualification, TinLutz and Susann Beucke lead by a large margin over Vicky Jurczok and AnikLorenz from Berlin. Beucke knows, however, that her team cannot rest on this in view of a total of three elimination regattas (2019 World Cup, 2020 World Cup, Trofeo PrincesSofía). The rivals are also known for their fighting qualities. Nevertheless: With fifth place in the World Cup in the 2019 world championships, Lutz / Beucke had scored 16 points for their elimination account. Jurczok / Lorenz, on the other hand, had disappointed the World Cup with 27th place and ended without points. On the basis of this cushion, the fight for only one Olympic ticket in the women's skiff discipline will start in round two from February 10th. With these interesting questions as a portent: Can Susann Beucke sail herself? Is that not the case: Can TinLutz with substitute bowler LottWiemers, who has not been active in the Olympic sport for three years but shows excellent performances in preparation in Australia, build on the level of performance shown at the 2019 World Cup and defend the elimination lead? And: How do Jurczok / Lorenz react to the situation? Will the 2016 Olympians return to their usual strong form?

Impressed with silver at the 49er World Cup 2019 in December. What's going on for Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel at the 2020 World Cup in February?

The German 49er sailors, who also have their second Olympic qualification in their sights, are challenged at the same time. Vice-world champions Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel from the NRV Olympic Team are clearly ahead of their sparring partners Justus Schmid / Max Boehme (Kiel Yacht Club) and Jakob Meggendorfer / Andreas Spranger (Bavarian Yacht Club). At the same time, the mixed catamaran crews in Nacr17 with the top team Paul Kohlhoff / AlicStuhlemmer (Kieler Yacht Club) are in action in front of Geelong in the same area. From a German point of view, this second week of February will be even more interesting, because not far from Geelong in the Melbourne area of the Sandringham Yacht Club, Germany's best laser sailors and laser radial players are also challenged at their world championships. Philipp Buhl from the Alpsee-Immenstadt sailing club and SvenjWeger from the Potsdam Yacht Club will be at the start there. Both would love to usher in the 2020 Olympic year with a strong result.
