These Are The Nominees For The Boat Building Oscars 2021

The decision is still pending, but the preselection has been made: the jury of the twelve leading sailing magazines in Europe selected the best new releases in each of five categories. And testing at sea has already begun.

Ten days ago the editors-in-chief and test bosses met for the first time in Kiel-Schilksee to sail the group of luxury yachts there; The Dragonfly 40 was also part of the party. Starting next Monday, the second round before Cannes, before the last series of tests starts in front of LRochelle on the Atlantic coast at the beginning of October.

Three locations, three test drives lasting several days - such a great effort has never been necessary in the almost 20-year history of Europe's Yacht of the Year. Last year the lavish program in Port Ginest near Barcelona was concentrated in a single event. But what's going on normally this year? Sure, Corona!

The recently stricter travel restrictions and quarantine regulations are currently making the boatbuilding Oscars more difficult. Nevertheless, the jury unanimously decided not to deviate from its credo of subjecting all nominees to extensive practical tests - just with a distance, mask, disinfectant solution and all due caution. After all, the start in Kiel already offered ideal conditions, and the weather models predict enough wind for Cannes too.

An innovation that had been planned for a long time and has now been implemented for the first time resulted in the nomination: catamarans and trimarans no longer sail in isolation in their own multihull category, but in the other groups according to their design. The two new Corsair 880 and Dragonfly 40 compete in the performance cruiser class, the Bali Catspace and Excess 11 in the cruising yachts, and the GarciExplocat 52 in the blue water boats.

Incidentally, German constructions are represented several times. Three very different and extremely interesting models made it to the final round: The BavariC42 comes from Giebelstadt and sails against Beneteau's Oceanis 40.1, among others. The Hanseyachts group is prominently represented with the Moody DS 41. And with the Viator Explorer 42 DS, there is also an innovative rough water yacht, designed in Berlin, designed on the Kiel Fjord, built in Holland.
