The hobby boat building of small ships is a world of its own. There are forums and fans, books and magazines as well as meetings of enthusiastic owners - especially in the USA, where there is a lively DIY scene. But even in this country, it is not uncommon for people to work on their own boat dream in garages, workshops or halls until it finally swims.

Small but very nice: The Pocketship is a popular self-build boat from the USA

The plans are also available to buy in Germany
The appealing thing about it is obvious: Long - and boring - winter weekends are a thing of the past, wishes can be implemented individually, the ship is known from the keel seam to the pulpit, and maybe you can even save some money compared to buying a new one.
But above all, it can - and should! - Do-it-yourself construction is fun, provided that the time and financial resources as well as your own manual skills are realistically assessed before the start of construction.

The new Class Globe 5.80 is intended to be a do-it-yourself boat for coastal and deep sea sailors

Piotr Czarniecki is currently building construction number 1 in Poland
In the third part of the current series, we show a selection of small cruisers from 12 to 26 feet that were created independently with the help of plans or modular systems and tell their stories of origin. The range of boats is large; From the cuddly mini boat to the sporty cruising sailor, many variants of your own dream ship can be realized.
Part 3 of the series can be found in YACHT 17/2020. The magazine is available in the DK shop, here as a digital edition, or you can download the article directly from the link below
