Fortunately, complete loss of the rudder blade is very rare. Nevertheless, it makes sense and also good seamanship to have an emergency plan in mind for this situation. Because if you hit the ground roughly or if you collide with floating debris, it can happen: the fin is gone. Then you have to act quickly, because the yacht is uncontrollable without a rudder blade.

In the guidebook and online there are some tactics to get a rudderless boat into a safe harbor without outside help. To try this out, we borrowed from the charter company Moleine Bavari40 Cruiser with the rudder blade removed. Together with employees from Sailpartner, we played out all possible scenarios on the bay in front of Breege: Steering with the trim of the sail, different variants of towing the damaged vessel, and the construction of an emergency rudder with on-board resources.
