Just a week after the bankruptcy of Bavari, lightning flashes from the sky today over Henan on the west Swedish island of Orust. The news of the dissolution of Najad struck like a storm. Because some might have thought of a series: first the big ones from Franconia, now the fine little ones from Sweden.

But although there are one or two parallels: The situation is actually quite different. Najad is not insolvent and the investor is by no means withdrawing.

Nevertheless, Håkan Eksandh made a difficult decision: he informed all employees of the shipyard in the morning that they would lose their jobs after the yachts that were still under construction had been delivered.

No longer at the helm: Jörgen Ottoson

Jörgen Ottoson, the managing director, came before that. According to his account, he quit the job himself. As YACHT found out online from the group of shareholders, it was of course a forced departure. Ottoson had lost the support of the supervisory board after serious losses in previous years and also in the first half of 2018.

According to information from the holding company, operations will be carried out calmly and not be liquidated at the expense of customers or suppliers. "All bills are paid, all boats are delivered," a senior manager told the YACHT.

Unlike some local sources, this in no way means the end for Najad. "We will continue. In the future, we will only be relocating production to Uddevall." Some of the Arcona models have already been built there. The brand, known for solid and successful performance cruisers, has only recently been part of Najad and is better positioned. Hence the decision to withdraw from Henan in an orderly fashion.

Najad thus remains in troubled seas. The shipyard has been shipwrecked twice in recent years: in 2011 and again in 2013. Since the takeover by Håkan Eksandh, there has been continuity, at least on the shareholder side.

You can read more about the upheaval soon in YACHT 11-2018. This also includes the exclusive test of the new Najad 395, which celebrated its debut in January at boot Düsseldorf.
