You almost think you are back in the time of the saltpeter voyage - when the famous Hamburg shipping company F. Laeisz sent its Flying P-Liner across the Atlantic and around the dreaded Cape Horn to Chile to load the raw material that is so important for Europe's industry and agriculture. Today one of the last remaining witnesses of this time lies at the equipment pier of the Wewelsflether Peters shipyard on the Stör near Glückstadt: the "Peking".

The restoration work on the hull and rig has been completed, four masts, freshly painted, protrude into the sky, the hull shines in the shipping company colors red, white and black. On September 7th, the barque is to be maneuvered onto the Elbe with the morning floods and then towed to Hamburg. As a museum ship, it will be accessible to everyone there in the future.

How the ship, which was basically almost a wreck, has been refurbished piece by piece in the past few months, the meticulousness and passion that went into preserving this maritime monument and what visitors can look forward to in the future, that's all read now in the new YACHT (issue 18/2020, now available in newsagents and can be ordered as a print or digital edition).
