A furling mast makes sailing handling much easier, but for optimal function the outhaul and reefing line must be operated at the same time. This requires two winches and a corresponding number of hands. The SMF system from Seldén promises significantly more convenience. The abbreviation stands for Synchronized Main Furling, i.e. the outhaul and furling mast drive are controlled automatically, so that only a button has to be pressed for rolling out and in.
Seldén's synchronized furling system in practice

The outhaul winch and electric drive of the furling mast work together automatically, so that only a button has to be pressed to set or recover the sail
The system includes an electric mast drive and the newly developed three-speed electric winch E40i. Thanks to the internal motor, it needs space below deck. The associated control unit regulates the speed of the outhaul winch relative to the mast drive so that the mainsail is rolled out cleanly and without killing. Since the electric winch cannot run backwards, the outhaul must still be lowered by hand for reefing.
Convert the Selden roller mast to an electric drive
The system is suitable for yachts between 36 and 43 feet and can be retrofitted in all roller masts of the RB series. The conversion package for the mast costs about 3700 euros. The E40i winch is available for 2250 euros with an aluminum drum, the stainless steel version costs 2400 euros. If you want the entire system, you should contact a Seldén service company.
