Damage to the port in Kos
Tonight the earth shook for less than a minute, and yet the damage, especially on the island of Kos, was considerable. In the historic old town, the ceiling of a bar collapsed, two vacationers were killed, probably more than 100 injured, three of them seriously. Many houses are damaged, parts of an old mosque collapsed. Tourists and locals stayed the night out of fear of aftershocks and damage to homes. A minor tidal wave as a result of the magnitude 6.7 quake flooded the ports and the beach area of the capital. In the old town port of Kos there was severe damage to the quay wall and to some ships, especially to excursion steamers. There are relatively few yachts there, they mostly go to the Kos Marina. Here is a photo gallery of the damage on the Greek website Kosnews 34.

"There was also damage to some boats and the system in Maring. But the exact extent still has to be investigated," an employee of Kos Maring told YACHT online. All owners of damaged ships will be informed immediately by the marina management. The port is not closed, however, boats can enter and leave. Charter crews and owners should expect delays and must contact the marina shortly before arrival, which is customary in the Kos marina anyway. The city harbor, on the other hand, was closed for the time being today, and ferry traffic is temporarily suspended. Charter crews should contact their base before arriving, if they have not already contacted the sailors. New crews who take over the boats on Saturday should also be prepared for delays.
The quake also caused horror on the Turkish side of the Aegean Sea. "Our house wobbled. You had the feeling that it was made of rubber!" Reports a German owner who lives in Bodrum. People left their homes. Boats were jumbled up in some of the smaller fishing harbors; Ships on land have been damaged, but the consequences are marginal. There was minor damage on land, but no injuries or even deaths.
The Turkish-Greek border area is one of the most active earthquake zones in Europe and is repeatedly hit by tremors. The island of Lesbos was only hit in the spring.
