A sailing yacht went up in flames yesterday about five miles east of Kegnæs at the entrance to the Little Belt. The 67-year-old skipper from Berlin was alone on board at the time. At the last second he fled to the life raft.

A nearby sailing yacht reported the emergency to the Sea Rescue Center (MRCC) Bremen and the Danish sea rescue services in Aarhus. The Danish Navy Home Service sent a patrol boat and the Navy sent a SAR helicopter. In the meantime the skipper had been lifted from the life raft by a Danish fishing boat. A little later the rescue cruiser "Nis Randers" arrived at the scene of the accident and took the man on board.

The ten-meter-long sailing yacht sank a short time later. At the point south of Alsen it is up to 31 meters deep, so the site of the wreck did not have to be marked. Shipping has been notified.

The skipper was first taken to Maasholm and then first to the hospital in Eckernförde under suspicion of smoke inhalation. He is fine and has since been released.
