The Australian sailing legend Jon Sanders arrived in Australia for the first time in almost exactly a year: The now 81-year-old sailed around the world on his own last year - and for the eleventh time!

Strictly speaking, this latest circumnavigation of the world by the record skipper, which has not yet reached the port of departure of his voyage, Fremantle on the west coast near Perth, is not yet over.

In November 2019, Jon Sanders set out to sail around the world in stages. First he sailed west across the Indian Ocean, then across the South Atlantic and through the Panama Canal into the Pacific. The long stage across the Pacific Ocean was followed by a stop in Tahiti. From there, Sanders recently returned to Australia for the final blow.

He covered a good 21,800 nautical miles on the voyage with his "Perie Banou II". After today's arrival, according to Australian media, he first had to take a corona test, which was expected to be negative, which had spent the last 30 days at sea.

In the logbooks of the Australian there were numerous notable trips, including some first achievements, before this voyage. The exceptional skipper had sailed around the world ten times before, three times non-stop in a row.

Sanders spent almost two consecutive years at sea from 1986 to 1988, covering around 71,000 nautical miles without a break - a distance that no one has ever exceeded. At that time he already had experience of being alone at sea: Before that, he had sailed all around twice in a row.

Besides Wilfried Erdmann and six others, Jon Sanders is one of the few skippers who have a non-stop circumnavigation of the world against the wind in their wake: In 1987 he sailed around the world with the "Perry Endeavor" in 250 days during his triple circumnavigation.

At the beginning of the year Jon Sanders received the "Lifetime Award" from the Ocean Cruising Club for his exceptional achievements.

Sanders also made his most recent trip around the world to set an example against the catastrophic plastic pollution of the oceans.
