On Friday evening, October 2nd, a yacht caught fire and sank between Zingst and Hiddensee. The single-handed sailor of the eleven-meter-long boat was able to save himself unharmed on the small island of Bock. He had previously noticed problems with the hydraulic system on board. He then went to the pier on the small, uninhabited island of Bock, which lies between the eastern tip of the Zingst peninsula and the southern tip of the Hiddensee island. When the skipper had moored his boat there, he noticed a fire on board and alerted the sea rescuers around 9:50 p.m. He was able to save himself on land unharmed.

The Bremen Sea Emergency Management of the DGzRS alerted the crew of the sea rescue boat "HerthJeep", which is stationed in Stralsund. In addition, the Stralsund water protection police and professional fire brigade were asked for support, both of which set course for the accident site with their own small boats as well as the lifeboat.

About 20 minutes after the alarm was raised, the skipper reported to the sea rescue service again. The fire had spread on board so quickly that the mooring lines were now burned. The damaged ship was now floating in the reed belt of the island. Shortly afterwards, the water police's rubber dinghy arrived. The police took the skipper on board and brought him to Barhöft.

When the boats of the sea rescuers and the fire brigade arrived a little later, the sailing yacht was already completely in flames and threatened to break apart. Little by little she sank off the island. Sea rescuers and firefighters concentrated on securing the jetty.

Together with a boat from the technical relief organization and a sports boat with emergency services from the Prohn volunteer fire brigade, they set oil barriers during the night.

At the time of the accident, easterly winds around 5 Beaufort and about half a meter swell prevailed in the area.
