JK28. Briefly overlapping genoa, large cockpit, attached rudder
The JK28 project started as a private initiative by Hans-Werner Zachariassen, regatta sailor from Hamburg (Finn, Drachen). He wanted a well-sailing dinghy cruiser, with more comfort than the 20er and easier to sail with two people. The design office Judel / Vrolijk & Co in Bremerhaven had the plans for an elegant 30 mm dinghy cruiser in their computer. For the project, they were then adapted to a roadworthy width of 2.55 meters with a length of 8.5 meters.
The JK28 is built and expanded at Thomas Bergner Bootsbau in Trappenkamp, north of Hamburg. The shipyard is known for its beautiful, form-glued 20-seater dinghy cruisers made of wood. The JK28, on the other hand, is laid out as a GRP sandwich construction (hull and deck). A structural group made of CNC-milled plywood panels is also glued in for stiffening. The saved weight is transferred as a lead filling into a profiled ballast sword made of carbon fiber. The fully retractable sword, which weighs 225 kilograms, makes the JK28 capsize-proof.

The rig was taken over from the H-boat, but upscaled by 10 percent. In contrast to the conventional dinghy cruisers, the JK28 concept dispenses with the use of an exhausting and widely overlapping genoa. Instead, a shorter, higher headsail is used. A self-tacking jib is also possible as an option. A furling device for jib or genuist is installed below deck. If desired, a gennaker can also be driven on an extendable bowsprit made of carbon fiber.
For touring, the JK28 shows a simple interior design with four sufficiently large berths. Optionally, there is also a toilet and a small pantry block with stove and sink. The concept envisages that the interior should only be used for sleeping, but not for lingering. For this, the entire cockpit can be completely closed with a cake stand in bad weather.
With the fully recoverable ballast sword and the attached rudder blade, the draft can be reduced to a minimum of 20 centimeters. The JK28 can be sailed right up to the shore and slipped over a ramp. The 2.55 meter wide and just over a tonne heavy boat can be easily transported on a suitable road trailer.
Andreas Bock from Berlin is also part of the project team. He will take care of the marketing of the JK28 and the possible class structure. The price list from Thomas Bergner Bootsbau has not yet been finalized. According to Bock, a simply equipped basic version of the JK28 could come onto the market for as little as 30,000 euros gross.
Additional information and contacts will soon be available on the website www. JK28.org.
