Anyone who wants to renew the current asset is faced with a huge selection with an almost unmanageable price structure. But what do the differences mean in practice?
If you set it straight, the luff sags in the first gust and ugly folds form. Worse still, the sail changes its professionalism. It becomes more bulbous, creates more heel and rudder pressure. Properties that make the boat slow down. A courageous turn of the halyard winch will restore the desired trim, but only for a short time - until the line gives way again.
A typical sign of inferior rope. A good halyard does not only have to have little stretch and a high breaking load, it should also withstand the daily struggle with winch and snappy trap stopper for as long as possible.
The differences in quality of the ropes cannot be seen from the outside, which is why we tested 14 lines made of polyester and Dyneem in the test laboratory for their suitability as a halyard.
