The wooden boathouse from 1920 burned brightly in a short time
The fire broke out late Friday afternoon and was discovered by a cyclist who immediately called the police. In the historic boathouse from 1920, which is under monument protection, about 15 ships were stored, including the club boat "Aphrodite" as well as sails and other accessories. The mast warehouse was also in the house. The boats, masts and sails were badly damaged or destroyed by the fire, and three firefighters and two water rescue workers were injured during the extinguishing work. The property damage is estimated at around two million euros.
Nothing is yet known about the cause of the fire. The building, which was in danger of collapsing, could initially not be entered. According to a report by "Münchner Merkur", a walker claims to have heard a loud bang shortly before the fire. Another witness reported that shortly before the fire broke out, something burning had flown into the building.
The Munich Yacht Club is one of the most exclusive clubs in southern Germany. Some time ago it hit the headlines when an acid attack was carried out on a kite lying there (YACHT reported). The perpetrator is still unknown. It is unclear whether there is a connection to the fire.
