Crete has enjoyed great popularity among German package holidaymakers for decades, but Greece's largest island in the south of the Aegean is usually not a big issue among yachties. The main reason for this are the high mountains that criss-cross Cret from west to east. In the summer, the Meltemi falls from them in gale force in many places and makes the south coast unsafe. A region more for Aegean connoisseurs.
YACHT reader Peter Osenberg therefore mainly explored the area in the off-season. He sailed almost completely around the island and found a very pristine Greece. Hardly any other crews are on site, apart from the tourist spots there are wonderful anchorages and more good harbors than you might initially assume when looking at the map. But the indicated gusts of fall also attacked the crew one or the other time.
