"Cheminées Poujoulat" in the glitsch. Stamm had problems with the hydrogen generators and the central winch

The Swiss man's tale of suffering takes on a new dimension: Even on the third attempt, he doesn't finish the race. The jury justified their disqualification with the maneuver that Stamm drove during his anchor stop off Enderby Island in New Zealand. He was anchored there when it began to slip and he drifted towards a Russian research ship that was also anchored there. According to Stamm, this was a dangerous situation and so he made radio contact with the ship's captain. The skippers agreed that Stamm could go alongside with his Open 60 in order to defuse the situation immediately. Stamm must have had his tragic stranding in a similar situation at the last Vendée Globe on the Kerguelen in mind.

Eliminated: Bernard Stamm

According to the jury, this was a clear violation of the regulations prohibiting outside help. But it got even worse. While Stamm was performing the maneuver, a Russian crew member of the research vessel jumped onto his Open 60 without being asked and began to pull in the anchor of "Cheminées Poujoulat". When Stamm noticed this, he did not send the man off board. He justified this with the fact that, on the one hand, he was in a dangerous situation, the boat threatened to collide with the research vessel, and, on the other hand, he was unable to explain the complicated facts to the man in the hectic pace of the moment. The boat was then safely alongside, and Stamm repaired his defective hydro generator.

A few days ago, Bernard Stamm was bitterly angry with the technology on board his Open 60 in an e-mail from shipboard and took himself into court:

We couldn't imagine that some parts of the hydro-generators were so undersized. They are constructed like a Lego toy, not a serious piece of equipment for such a boat! People keep telling me I couldn't care for every part Board be responsible, I would have to hand over responsibility. But if I do, see what happens! I then have to bear the consequences alone. Next time I would take everything into my own hands! I'm really pissed off, and I think it is justified. (…) When I look back, it is ultimately the container that we rammed into during the Jacques Vabre Transat.

Stamm has not yet published a statement on his disqualification.

UPDATE: In the meantime, the Swiss citizen has commented on his website and wants to have the proceedings reopened. The jury would not have understood that there was a risk of collision and he had no other way of resolving the situation. Apart from that, he wants to finish the race, no matter what the jury's decision will be.
