The ship has osmosis - a knowledge that can bring beads of sweat to the forehead of the owner. Not only the idea that the beloved yacht is slowly being decomposed by the salt water like an effervescent tablet - above all, the diagnosis means one thing: To repair the damage, a courageous grip in the wallet will be necessary. The professional renovation of a ten-meter yacht costs around 9,000 euros.
The term "osmosis" is associated with great horror, especially in Germany; there is hardly a boat buyer who does not inspect a ship for signs of vesicle disease. If raised areas found on the underwater hull are opened with a chisel, it is not uncommon for one or two delaminated layers to be detached from the hull. The concern has become certainty: the ship has osmosis.
However, we explain in the YACHT workshop in issue 11/2014 that not every osmosis case requires quick action and how a complete renovation can be carried out inexpensively by yourself.
