At the latest after his successful extreme races through all four major deserts of the world, the now 51-year-old Austrian experienced worldwide admiration. He had already run several extreme races before, and before that he had won pretty much every title in his own country that can be won as a long-distance runner.
Anyone who had predicted such an athletic career 30 years earlier Schiester would have probably dismissed him as a total weirdo. Schiester was a postman in a small village, he was a chain smoker and he drank. At some point he got the corner and started his life all over again.
Then a few years ago he discovered sailing for himself. Since then he has felt most comfortable on the water. And of course he went straight back to the new job extremely. He is currently traveling in Southeast Asia.
In the YACHT interview he talks about his past, which almost ruined his health. He tells how he managed to restart, what motivates him, what drives him - and the crucial role that little notes played and still play in this.
And he reports on his beginnings as a sailor, the first trip in the Adriatic and his current journey across the Indian Ocean to the east. You can read it now in the new YACHT (issue 7/2019, now available in newsagents and as a digital edition).
