Come, see, win: Markus Wieser's Melges team

Change of course for Markus Wieser: After the MedCup and the "Container" campaign by Udo Schütz were discontinued, the Starnberg-born man is repositioning himself. This season he wants to attack in the Melges 24, has just won the Melges 24 Cup at Lake Starnberg with his AEZ Sailing Team at the beginning and is currently starting with Markus Steinlein, Matti Paschen and Pascal Rambeau at the Austrian championship on the Attersee. With the exception of the fast Ricardo Simonecchi, Wieser has the competition under control again in this class. Until the World Cup on Lake Garda in June, the gap to the Italian should also be equalized. At the same time, it is about successes in the Pro / Am regatta series RC44. This year Wieser will only start in the kite at the European Championships and will not expand his campaign until the 2013 World Cup. The new dragon for reaching for the crown is already in the garage.

How do you explain your move to Melges 24?

We won almost everything in the kite and were looking for new challenges that would make sailing fun. Sailing with the Melges 24 is a lot of fun! And we will continue to be supported by our Transbunker, AEZ and BMW teams.

After the end of the Audi MedCup, sailing lacks a leading monohull class. Which series do you think has the highest quality in terms of sport?

The RC-44 circuit is very well positioned with currently 15, and soon even 17 boats. Although the owners steer here, the international crews are top-class. The annual budgets are manageable and the competition is top-class. The concept is right. The use in the MedCup, on the other hand, swallowed up fortunes. It was simply no longer possible to motivate enough owners and sponsors for such expenses. People want to have fun and not just fight material battles anymore.

Do you follow the America’s Cup World Series?

Yes, I sometimes watch the videos in the evenings. That looks really cool. But I'm sure it would look at least as cool on monohull yachts and I really regret switching to catamarans.

How is your own America’s Cup interest doing?

This is currently out of the question. I am not a catamaran sailor and I will no longer either. That’s the question of the young people from the skiffs. But let's see what happens after 2013. The Americans want to defend the cup first. And if the kiwis cannot prevent that, then it will probably continue on two-hulls. But I'm too old for that and don't feel like it. So I do other things.

It looks like the change of course in the America’s Cup confused rather than ordered the sailing scene …

There are far more monohull sailors than catamaran sailors worldwide. This is another reason why the change of course does not fit. Now the charismatic AC sailors as we know them are some kind of extinct species. The field currently belongs to the fast-paced young cat and skiff sailors. But I am not sure whether this path will lead to success. Only the future can tell.

What are your goals for this season?

We want to do optimally at the Melges 24 World Championship, fight for the win of the season with the RC 44 and then attack at the Dragon World Championship next year. With my current Melges team Markus Steinlein, Matti Paschen and Pascal Rambeau, we are very well positioned. We have already achieved small successes with very little preparation time and will now work consistently on the optimization of boats and sails so that we can have a say at the World Championships on Lake Garda.
