The season of the RC-44 class, a series initiated by America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts, has just started off Dubai. At the start, the home team won with its German skipper. The second part of the event, the Fleetrace, is currently running.

With the victory in the match race part, the team of Starnberger Markus Wieser, 46, secured an ideal starting position for the fleet race part, in which the amateur helmsman of the team will take the helm. The victory came unexpectedly, as the SeDubai (TSD) team, founded in March 2008, had not been able to convincingly intervene in the action so far. According to Wieser, there are many reasons for the enormous increase so early in the season. Above all, the last two seasons did not go optimally. "We had to suspend two events when our boat was sent back to Dubai in autumn 2008", Wieser told YACHT online.

Wieser continues: “The requirement from Dubai was to build a local helmsman for the Fleetrace. This turned out to be difficult because Jousef bin Lahey had great difficulty getting used to the RC44. The switch from the laser was very difficult for him and his sailing experience was not enough to survive in this strong field. In addition, new teams were added that raised the level. We slept through this trend during our absence. When we got back on the circuit last spring, we lagged a long way behind. The top teams work very professionally, no expense or effort is spared. Many America’s Cup teams and sailors are now active here."

However, the integration of the helmsman from the emirate did not succeed. Instead, the Italian Raimondo Tonelli takes over during the fleet races, in which no professional is allowed to ride a bike. "At some point we had to realize that Jousef could not come to the level of steering an RC44 quickly and safely over the course," said Wieser.

In the match race, however, professionals are allowed to steer, and that is Wieser's domain. "In January we had a very intensive training session here in Dubai with the winning team from last year", is how he explains the success. “Match race, fleet race, sailing testing, etc. Rod Davies was the coach of the two teams and that brought us a lot. In addition, our boat captain Holger Lehning (Kiel) and Eberhard Magg (Kressbronn) improved the boat before this regatt. Now we're really fast again and everything works perfectly."

After the Al Maktoum Trophy, the boats will be shipped back to Genu and then transported by trucks to the Traunsee in Austria, where the AustriCup will take place at the beginning of May. In June it will continue in Copenhagen, at the end of July Valenciauf will be on the program. The first class World Championships will take place in October on the Canary Islands / Lanzarote.
