Weighing just 39 kilograms: the drive from the Finnish firmOceanvolt

The installation is very easy: The electrical system is designed as a plug-and-play solution, and the saildrive fits on the cut-outs from Volvo and Yanmar. The motor has closed cooling and lubrication; there is no contact between parts inside the drive and the outside water. The installation in a patented, flexible mounting system should not transmit any vibrations to the fuselage, according to the manufacturer.

Each drive is put through its paces for six hours before delivery. "Nothing comes out with us that we are not convinced of ourselves," assures Christian Hallberg, Managing Director of Oceanvolt. "Quality is very important to us, which is why we were able to build the entire system from just 30 parts. This ensures great reliability" the Finn continues.

Another highlight is that the batteries can be charged despite the folding prop under sail. To do this, the prop is unfolded at the push of a button, and it immediately begins to generate electricity via the motor, which then functions as a generator. Because of the folding prop, which is optimized for propulsion, the efficiency when charging is rather low, but electricity can still be generated in this way.

The low weight allows the installation of large battery banks without becoming heavier than a conventional diesel. The drive is waterproof according to IP-54.

The distribution takes place directly through the manufacturer, also in Germany. A larger engine with 15.9 kilowatts of power is currently being developed. For the small motor with saildrive, which is already available, 10,700 euros have to be transferred to Finland. In addition, the transport to Germany must be arranged, the delivery is ex works.
