The sailing robot Roboat on a test drive off Eckernförde.

The aim of the company is to eavesdrop on the harbor porpoise population: The marine biologists at Oregon State University (USA) promise new insights into migration routes, mating sites and communication behavior of the animals with the sail drive producing only minimal noise. With the help of an underwater microphone attached to the boat, the sounds of the marine mammals are recorded.

The vehicle itself with the name Roboat is not unknown to YACHT readers, we have already reported several times on this development by the Austrian Society for Innovative Computer Science (INNOC). With the research project, the fully autonomous, unmanned sailing boat will be used for the first time as part of a long-term mission. But for the technicians it is about more: A new world record in robot sailing is to be set. The plan is to cover a route of 150 nautical miles, which will take up to 100 hours without interruption on the high seas. The boat also has to cope with unforeseen situations and independently master the complex processes of sailing from route planning to maneuvering. The French hold the current world record for robots at 95 nautical miles.

Batteries, solar cells, computers, endless technology: the inner workings of the Roboat sailing robot

So if you come across an unmanned keel dinghy with complex electronics off Eckernförde in July, then this is not a sea emergency, but the Austrian robot on an eavesdropping mission.
