The operation of the swords, which allowed the US team to stick the jibs on the foils at the last America’s Cup, was one of the essential keys to success. The New Zealanders had shown it, the Americans often landed on the nose. But just one month before the start of the final, the maneuver worked out better and better. What happened? Was an illegal technique used, as is often assumed?

The American Jack Griffin has now published drawings and photos on his blog that were allegedly leaked to him by the cup winner. Accordingly, the technical improvement is a mechanical control for operating the angle of attack of the wing blades. The helmsman James Spithill was able to set this angle using buttons on the steering wheel. Depending on the angle of the horizontal wing on the sword, the cat rises or falls.

In a first version, however, the operation was too rough and dependent on the hydraulic pressure that has to be built up by the team and the pressure on the foil. The new component allegedly made it possible to adjust the angle very quickly in 0.5 degree steps.

According to Griffin, this also made it possible to decisively improve the turning technique, as he proves in a video analysis.

Team New Zealand tried to have the equipment declared illegal, but the protest was received too late. Otherwise he would have been rejected by the jury.

These documents do not provide any real information as to whether things were right with the sudden increase in performance of the Americans. They are definitely an interesting insight into the cup's high-tech.
