Sailing in Turkey - for owners from the 90th day only with a visa

At first it was bad news for owners who relocated their boat to Turkey: In February 2012 the Turkish government announced a change to the visa rules. In future, Germans should only be allowed to spend a maximum of 90 days visa-free in Turkey every 180 days, shorter multiple visits will be added. For example, an owner with permanent berth in a Turkish marina would have been considerably restricted in using his boat. Older crews and long-haul sailors in particular appreciate Turkey as an area in which they are out and about for a long time, especially since the season lasts until late October.

But now exceptions will be possible. As YACHT Turkey correspondent Udo Hinnerkopf reports, longer stays beyond the 90 days should also be approved upon request:

"If a stay of more than 90 days is planned before entering the country, a corresponding visa should be applied for at a Turkish diplomatic mission. The embassy recommends contacting the Turkish authorities, consulates or lawyers if you have any questions, especially if you have frequent long-term stays in Turkey are intended."

The German Consulate General of Izmir has published a corresponding notice on the Internet.

Exactly how the procedure works, which papers are to be submitted and whether the Turkish authorities issue the extension generously or not, will become clear in the course of the first cases in the next few months.
