After Andreas Lochbrunner's surprising resignation three weeks ago, the Presidium proposed MonKüppers, who had previously been responsible for recreational and popular sports, as acting president. The woman from Oberhausen is to temporarily lead the association until the regular elections on Sailing Day in November. In the almost 130-year history of the DSV, she would be the first woman to head it.

She was appointed to the association's governing body as vice-president just a year ago. She is the youngest member of the Presidium. Before she can officially take over the chairmanship, she needs confirmation from the sailing council, which is, however, a matter of form.

Another decision, which is also on the agenda of the extraordinary meeting, is of course much more important: It concerns the question of whether and to what extent the association may take out loans for ongoing restructuring and the promotion of competitive sports.

According to YACHT information, the budget approved by the Sailing Day two years ago is not sufficient to cover the expenses. The draft budget of 3.1 million euros did not take sufficient account of the special burdens resulting from the change process in the office and the expiry of the sponsorship contracts for the Sailing Team Germany.

Therefore, the DSV has to finance a gap of around 1.2 million euros this year alone - more than a third of the originally calculated total budget. If there were no significant funds from sports sponsorship in the following year, further funding would be required in 2018.

The Olympic squad has the largest share of the necessary loan amount (approx. 900,000 euros). As in previous years, it comprises ten classes, as planned. If the Sailing Council does not approve, or does not fully approve, the association's indebtedness, this would have to be drastically reduced - which in turn would reduce the marketing opportunities for the national sailing team, which is now known as the "German Sailing Team". The pending decision could also have an impact on the restructuring process that the office is currently in. It should become more service-oriented, more transparent, with improved services, especially for recreational athletes and cruising sailors, which also requires investments in the six-figure range

How this important course will turn out at the weekend is still completely unclear. One thing is certain: there has not been a comparable project in the DSV for decades.
