Since the first Advent, traffic has been flowing over the Schlei over the new, four-lane bascule bridge. The swing bridge was inaugurated on March 15, 1927. At that time it replaced the old pontoon bridge over the Schlei in need of repair.
Due to the rapidly increasing traffic, the decision for a two-lane carriageway was only made shortly before construction began; a single-lane carriageway was originally planned.
The bridge was operated electrically and had a manual control for emergencies. One year before its completion, the steamer "Lena" collided with the Königsstuhl (rotating pillar). This increased the total costs for the bridge to a good 980,000 Reichsmarks.
Now the iron monster is being dismantled with floating cranes and taken to Eckernförde to be scrapped. However, a small part is to be integrated into the redesign of the port area in Kappeln.
