Under the title "Volvo Champions Race", a new regatta series started in May 2003, in which top sailors from all over the world competed in the most dynamic Olympic boat classes, Tornado and 49er. The combination of sailing in two boat classes and a sailing-related supporting program make this new series so special.

With the "Volvo Champions Race", Volvo is increasing its sponsorship commitment in the sport of sailing and bringing regatta sailing closer to a broader audience through easily understandable rules, spectacular regatta action in front of the audience and an unusual supporting program. The three events take place in: Konstanz (May 8th - 11th, 2003), Schwerin (July 3rd - 6th, 2003) and Travemünde (October 9th - 12th, 2003). In the mix of city and beach events, the audience is fully integrated and interactively involved in both the sports and the supporting program. The experienced yacht clubs at the event locations ensure that everything runs smoothly, and an international jury ensures that the sporting part is regulated at the high level of active sailors.

The "Volvo Champions Race" is a series of invitations to which 12 teams from the top world-ranking sailors of both boat classes are invited, including of course Olympic, world and European champions. In addition, three wildcards are given per boat class, so that a total of 30 teams are at the start at each event. The events each last four days, with the official races taking place over three days.

With the "Volvo Champions Race", the Swedish car manufacturer is underlining its commitment to German sailing and ensuring an attractive arc of suspense until the next Volvo Ocean Race in 2005.
