"Banque Populaire V"

The 131-foot Tri is only about a day or 535 nautical miles ahead of Franck Cammas' existing record. A high pressure trough had cost Loïck Peyron and his 13-person crew almost 1,700 miles of the hard-earned lead. The French had advanced to almost 63 degrees south latitude in order to bypass the weak wind channel, which blocked the way like a barrier, as far south as hardly any boat in the last record attempts. Only when they passed the first icebergs a few miles apart did they turn north again.

But now it's going again with great strides and speed of around 32 knots: "Banque Populaire V" meets strong, south-westerly winds for the ascent to the north. "They should give us good conditions up to about 40 degrees north", emailed the British crew member Brian Thompson from board. The best for the holiday, so to speak.

However, "Groupam3" was also quite fast on the first two days after the passage through Cape Horn. It was not until the third day that Franck Cammas and his crew struggled against a light headwind and had to cross. So it remains exciting.
