They were already on the highest podium at the Maior regatt at the start of the season and have now repeated their successes at the Kiel Cup: Axel Seehafers X-41 "Sportsfreund", steered by Gordon Nickel at the 125th Kiel Week, and Kai Mares' Itali9.98 "Immac Fram" are sailing on the wave of success this year.

On the outer track of the Kiel Fjord, the "Big Boats" found enough breeze for two final races on the lightest day so far in the first half of the Kiel Week. Race director Eckart Reinke had already announced the evening before that he wanted to start with a short race so that he could start the second race of the day in time before the last allowed start opportunity. He followed up the words with deeds. With a total of nine races over four days, the sailors could look forward to a complete week in Kiel. "Today we had another twelve to 15 knots of wind, really great sailing," said Bertil Balser, chairman of the regatta association Seesegeln (RVS) and trimmer on board the victorious "Sportsfreund".

As a small downer, the fact that participation in the Kiel Cup with only seven boats in ORC I + II and 13 yachts in ORC III remained manageable this year. "The changes in the process were not sufficiently communicated," explained Balser, "and then there were a few missing yachts for other reasons. There were already ten crews fewer than in May."

Sailing itself, however, was a great summer pleasure. The clear decisions of the race committee, precise courses and the good contact between the conductors and the actors were well received by the sailors. Behind the "Sportsfreund", who was not affected by an early start on the third day of the regatta, the "Intermezzo" team of Jens Kuphal from Berlin won second place. His Landmark 43, along with the former "Senta", is the 2018 World Cup winning boat, but it always has to be ahead of the powerful X41 yachts in order to be able to beat them on a calculated basis. At this Kiel Cup, that was partly successful. The "podium sandwich", in the middle of which the "Intermezzo" crew was able to place itself at the end, forms next to the victorious "sports friend" Michael Berghorn's third-placed "Halbtrocken 4.0" - also an X-41.

In ORC III, the Italia 9.98 boats remain the measure of all things in this country, taking first and second places in the Kiel Cup. However, with Knut Freudenberg's "Halbtrocken", a First 36.7 was involved in the struggle for a top three placement, as well as promising. But in the end the team of Kai Mares (Dänischenhagen) benefited from their focused start and the first five victories in six races: The "Immac Fram" won with four points ahead of the Itali9.98 "OneSpirit" with helmsman Sören Brandt and the "Halbtrocken" ", which the" OneSpirit "brought close to the rear with a victory in the last race, only two points behind.

Here it goes to the results.
