Handheld devices with touchscreen: The absence of buttons leaves more space for the screen

Large display, small housing - this is what every user of handheld devices would like. In order to save space for the keys, manufacturers of hand-held chart plotters rely on touch-sensitive screens.

YACHT No. 6/2010 subjected the five current devices to a practical test. Key point: What good is a touchscreen with such small devices. Even the fingers of dainty people are bulky in relation to the display. Does this mean that it is operated exactly?

Since such devices are no longer built solely for seafaring, but have to cover a wide range of application areas, we also immediately examined whether all functions useful for route planning and navigation on the water are still available. The well-tried tax display in the form of a motorway, for example, is only offered by a few models.

If you want a GPS with navigation functions but prefer to do the map work on paper and therefore don't necessarily need an expensive plotter, you will also find three current devices from the classic group in our test. They provide position, speed and course as numbers and allow waypoint navigation. A newcomer among these handheld devices turned out to be a real all-rounder and can simultaneously serve as a data logger and wireless GPS mouse for the computer.
