Two victories in terms of sailing time and one in terms of calculated time: Tilmar Hansen's “Outsider” shaped the Sydbank Cup from Kiel to Copenhagen and back this year. Michael Berghorn's “Halbtrocken 4.0” in ORC B, Jonas Hallberg's “Hinden” in ORC C and Swede Rikard Roth with his “Xar” in the two-hand category were able to defend their titles. In light summer winds, 28 yachts had already glided over the starting line in three groups on a mirror-smooth fjord last week. In the course of the outward regatta in the Danish capital, the wind picked up and let the fleet get going. After a day of rest in Copenhagen, the return regatt was started, which demanded a lot of cruising ability from its participants in moderate winds from the southwest and west.

In the interests of the small boats, the race committee had shortened the track on the way to Copenhagen so that everyone could cross the finish line within the time limit. The first yacht to cross the finish line in front of Ålsgårde north of Helsingør was the TP52 “Outsider” with a crew led by offshore runner-up Tilmar Hansen from the Kieler Yacht Club (KYC). All other boats crossed the line within around 14 hours. Only two crews had to break off the run to Copenhagen. Which is why the response from the sailors was positive overall. "An excellent race," commented the Swede Rikard Roth.

The sailors were just as satisfied with the warm welcome they received from the KYC crew on their arrival in Tuborg Havn in the north of Copenhagen. After a day off in the Danish capital, with time to work on the boat or stroll through town, the award ceremony for the first half of the Sydbank Cup and the traditional BBQ were on the program on Friday evening in the Hellerup Sejlklub. These skippers and their crews were celebrated as winners of the first half of the season: Rikard Roth with the XP-44 "Xar" (Double Hand Group A), Carl Rasmus Richardsen with the Maxfun 35 "Tøsen" (Double Hand Group B), Andreas Rose with the J-125 "Needles and Pins" (ORC Full Crew), Michael Berghorn with the X-41 "Halbtrocken 4.0" (ORC B Full Crew) and Jonas Hallberg with the JPK 10.10 "Hinden" (ORC C Full Crew).

After a sociable evening in mild summer temperatures, the starting shot for the return regatt from Copenhagen over 150 nautical miles to Kiel was given on Saturday morning under blue skies and in moderate winds. The course led towards Gedser south around Zealand and back to the Sailing City. The finish line was at the height of the Kiel lighthouse. The spinnakers, which had initially been set after the start, were quickly brought in again. Instead, a race with a very high cross section developed in south-westerly and later westerly winds between ten and 21 knots.

The “Outsider” was the first ship to cross the finish line at the Kiel lighthouse after 17 hours, 53 minutes and 47 seconds of sailing time around four o'clock in the morning and was thus back in port several hours before the other regatta participants. In the ORC group, the “Outsider” won ahead of Stefan Kunstmann's BALTIC 52 “Future IV” from the Kieler Yacht Club and Andreas Rose with the “Needles and Pins”. “We have done everything that we set out to do. The regatt was a complete success for us. We owe that to a large extent to our navigator, who gave us all the wind shifters on the way back,”said Bo Teichmann from the“Outsider”crew, delighted with the victory.

In the ORC B group, the X-41 yachts were ahead in the race from Copenhagen to Kiel. Michael Berghorn won both courses with the X-41 "Halbtrocken 4.0" and was happy to have defended his title. “The way there to Copenhagen was great sailing and was much less strenuous than the way back. The race back to Kiel demanded a lot of enthusiasm from the crew, who sat on the edge the whole time,”summarized Berghorn. Sven Christensen's crew on the X-41 “Sydbank” and the X-41 “Stardust” with skipper Alf Henryk Wulf, who was also third in group ORC B on the way to Copenhagen, secured places two and three.

In the small yachts of the ORC C group, Jonas Hallberg did not contest first place from the first half of the season with the JPK 10.10 "Hinden" on the way back from Copenhagen to Kiel. Werner Lemmel’s team on the Swan 46 “Rarotonga” came in second ahead of Frank Mantwill’s X-362 Sport “Glüxkind”. “The way back was very exhausting because cruising is actually not our preferred course. But we sailed bravely and it worked out well,”said Jonas Hallberg. The Swede Rikard Roth and his crew member Lars Jörnvi also successfully defended their title from the previous year in the two-handed category XP-44 "Xar" and also won the second half of the season after the first half of the season. Second place went to Walter Watermann and Jan Henning Günther on the XP-44 "X-Day". Jan Stähr dropped from second place on the way to Copenhagen in the back race with the Figaro 2 “Gnaraloo” to third place.

In Group B of the Double Hand category, the list of results for the race back to the first places looked exactly the same as for the way there. Skipper Carl Rasmus Richardsen and LenFetting held first place with the Maxfun 35 “Tøsen”. This is followed by Dr. Lars Kyburg and Niels Töbke with the Comfortin42 “Ventus”. A remarkable number of regatta sailors expressed their enthusiasm for the atmosphere at the Sydbank Cup. “In addition to the good organization, the family character of the regatta and the nice togetherness of the sailors are particularly nice about the Sydbank Cup,” said the successful defending champion Michael Berghorn.
