49er

Hagara / Steinacher and Ruegge / Steiner are the names of the day winners of the Volvo Champions Race in Rostock's city harbor.

In tricky weather conditions, Tornado Olympic champion Roman Hagarund Hans-Peter Steinacher (Austria) sailed away from the competition in the city harbor, the 49ers were even able to complete three daily races and Tom Ruegge and his bowman Jörg Steiner from Switzerland coped best with the conditions on the Warnow. The sailors from the Alpine republics have thus reduced the much-invoked North German "home advantage" to absurdity.

Sun, rain, thunderstorms - the first day of the second tour stop of the Volvo Champions Race sailing series offered varied conditions for the 30 crews of the two Olympic sailing classes. The tornadoes had to take an involuntary break between the two races for a thunderstorm front.

Tornadoes

Olympic champion Hagarwar promptly full of respect for the area on the Warnow: "It's difficult here. Sometimes we have to wait longer for wind than in Austria, but that's perfect training for Athens," joked the 38-year-old gold medalist from Sydney. The best Germans after the first day of the regatta are the Olympic candidates Roland Gäbler (Tinglev) and Gunnar Struckmann (Kiel) in third place.

In the 49er class, after three races, the Swiss duo Ruegge / Steiner leads ahead of the German Olympic candidates Marcus Baur (Kiel) and Max Groy (Fleckeby). Their training partners Jan-Peter and Hannes Peckolt (Hamburg / Kiel) achieved a first and a third place and in the third round they had a botched lap with 12th place. The two brothers won the first stage of the Champions Race on the Starnberger

See and continue to ensure high training pressure at Baur / Groy.

The first onlookers were amazed to see the first races in the early afternoon, which led directly along the quay wall and across the Warnow - always within sight of the audience. A real challenge for the crews, because the short distances ensure that there is not a minute of rest on the boats. The races start at 10 a.m. in Rostock's city harbor on Saturday and Sunday.
