The new S-850 in the test

There are boats that have space. And there is the S-850. Consistently designed for water hiking, all other functions are subordinate to the keel sword. However, so much in advance, the boat is still well done. In addition, with this orientation it also arouses great interest from sailors. So there is a market apart from the increasingly established performance cruisers - a segment for boats that are designed for relaxed water hikes.

The new S-850 in the test

With a powerful built-in diesel, the Jütt device, lots of storage space and a comfortable cockpit, the S-850 is well positioned for this. Regardless of whether it is an inland trip or a trip to the Baltic Sea, everything seems possible. But the goal must not be in the direction of the wind, the way there complicates the high hull, the short rig with small sails and the high center of gravity. Together with the 2.5 tonne weight, this results in deficits in upwind sailing properties, as was shown in the test in the Neustädter Bucht.

6 to 8 knots of wind, no electricity and smooth water - usually good conditions for sword boats. Equipped with the optional self-tacking jib and a mainsail measuring almost 18 square meters, the S-850 needs a lot of start-up to break the 4-knot mark every now and then. The values only get better with the slightly larger Genu, but the unsuccessful cut of all sails wastes a lot of potential. They can be trimmed well, the fittings are sensibly dimensioned and placed. With the mainsail, however, you can only choose between a profiled cloth with loose shrouds or a flat board with properly trimmed rig. It is no surprise if the turning angles remain below expectations and the competition.

But if you give a jerk in the pods, the touring boat sets off relaxed and appealing. The skipper and crew sit comfortably in the cockpit or on the coaming, with the tiller boom and main sheet in hand. Everything is easy to reach and use, and can even be used with one hand.

The market in this area is manageable. In the major YACHT 2009 comparative test, only the Henk 25 was able to approach this volume region.
