The English Channel lies in the wake of the YACHT heavy-weather voyage with the "Marlin" from Portsmouth to LCoruñ and with it the first encounters with dense commercial shipping, longer waves, parts flying around from opening snaps and seasickness. The motto of the last few days has always been: opposite, always opposite, cross west, to the Scilly Islands, and from there to jump over the Bay of Biscay.

At least that was the plan until "Ophelia" appeared as a bright red spot on the Atlantic in the weather forecast and the initially weak wind forecast for the sea area turned into the opposite. Ophelia, hurricane level 2, which hisses in gusts with a wind speed of 85 knots, is currently pulling ten knots from the Atlantic to Europ– and according to current forecasts, it will pass north of the Bay of Biscay in the coming days.

Hopefully.

To leave over Ireland: "Ophelia", a level 2 hurricane

But "Ophelia's" mere presence south of the Azores is sufficient to transform the "Go West" plan into the "Go South" plan. "Marlin" is now calling at France instead of the westernmost tip of England to weather a possible change in the storm's trajectory. Because heavy weather trip or not, nobody on board is eager to get to know a hurricane in one of the most notorious sea areas in the world.

"Ophelia" is still only conditionally depressing, and the English Channel has also shown itself from a relatively tame side. So tame that test strokes were relaxed under storm sails - very few of the six crew members had never set Trysail and storm jib on a yacht before. Not even in a light wind exercise for the conditions that nobody really wants to experience - especially not on the Bay of Biscay.
