The Ems and Jade, Weser and Elbe are being dredged ever deeper so that the world's largest passenger, tanker and cargo ships can still enter the ports. But the deepening of the rivers silts up the small river ports, home to around 20,000 yachts.

The next generation of ocean liners will no longer be able to call at the ports on German rivers. The big ships like the luxury liner "Queen Mary 2" or the currently world's largest container ship "Colombo Express" are already arriving at their piers with the tidal wave. The economy therefore demands the adjustment of the fairways.

Affected sailors protest against this vehemently. The upcoming dredging would restrict water sports on the Ems, Jade, Weser and Elbe and thus threaten the local sailing clubs.

The owners and crews of more than 20,000 yachts are acutely affected. And after several submissions, the Themgar was put on the agenda for Sailors' Day last October. As a result, the German Sailing Association was commissioned to become more active in the matter.

You can read more about this explosive topic in the new YACHT, from February 8th at the kiosk.
