“We wanted to create a race that was both a challenge and easily accessible to everyone. And that you can drive if you have the time and the inclination and crew, "reports Otto le Grand. He had the idea for the regatt together with Berry Dijkhuizen. Both have been regatta sailors from childhood. What could be more natural than devising a new format yourself ?
The course for the 75 miles of the IJsselmeer is tricky
To keep the whole thing simple, sailing is done according to manageable handicaps. There is an ORC class, one according to waterline length, one according to Texel rating for multihulls, and the flat bottom ships that are widespread in the Netherlands also have their own measurements. And that was it. The only thing that counts is the average speed, derived from the calculated time. "Then it doesn't matter if, for example, a ton of something is misplaced in the course of the year," says le Grand. Those who get the most out of their boat over the course of the year will be in the front Yachts with a full crew, and line honors are also planned for the shortest time sailed.
Of course, the weather plays a significant role. If you catch the day with the right windmill, you can complete the whole round without a cross. After registering, you have one year to start. The possible break of at least seven hours can be used as a tactical element. Despite the tracker on the smartphone, the organizers trust the honesty of the participants: “Of course we don't have the opportunity to tell whether an engine is running. But people who do that don't fit the idea of the regatta either, "le Grand is certain.
In the meantime, the two makers have come up with a little sister to the 75 miles: the 30 miles from the Markermeer. The rules are the same except that there is no break.
With the right wind direction, it can be tackled without a cross: the course of the 30 Mijls Markermeer
Due to the uncomplicated requirements, the regatta charter crew is open to all. So if you want to spice up your vacation a little sporty, you can choose one of the rounds for it.
