Insiders had been waiting for this news for a long time. Now the BloemsmAluminiumbouw shipyard has announced that the replica of the former America's Cup winner has actually started.
It was right in 1934 when the original Rainbow fought a dramatic battle for the title defense of the most prestigious of all cups with "Endeavor". Because at the beginning it looked as if the design by W. Starling Burgess literally wasn't going to make a pot. Both first races were defeated by the construction of the Herreshoff shipyard. But then the tide turned. "Endeavor" could not win a single race in a row. The yacht took to the start a second time in 1937 against "Ranger", but was defeated.
D "Endeavor" (restored) and "Ranger" (reconstructed) are sailing again, the third in the bunch is expected on the track to be able to recreate historical battles.
The shipyard in Makkum, Holland, was not chosen for the project without good reason. The hulls of the J's "Lionheart" and "Atlantis" were built here under the supervision of the Dykstr & Partner office. The office looks back on 20 years of experience with restorations and replicas of old J's.
