The Westfälische Allgemeine Zeitung writes: “The Ruhrort Harbor Festival was overshadowed by a tragic accident. According to the water police, shortly after 7 p.m., a 58-year-old sailor was seriously injured while loading a yacht in the shipyard near Lünnemann.

He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he died a little later. According to initial investigations, the bow got caught in a scaffold and the boat fell back into the water. The 58-year-old man was hit by the mast and the crane hook.

The criminal investigation department of the water police has started the investigation with the support of the Duisburg police station. An expert opinion should clarify how the accident could have come about, said the spokesman for the waterway police, Ramon van der Maat."

The following obituary can be found on the website of the Duisburg Yacht Club:

Wolfgang Tauchert is dead.

Incredibly for everyone, our first chairman, Wolfgang Tauchert, had a fatal accident on Sunday. Since Thursday, 2006-17-08, he had worked with a DUYC team in the organization and race management of the match race for the duisport Cup during the 13th Duisburg Harbor Festival.

The sporting event ended successfully on Sunday afternoon. Then the boats still had to be craned out. Here it happened - he had a fatal accident through no fault of his own.

For many years, Wolfgang Tauchert helped shape the club as race director, as second chairman and since 1997 as first chairman, and has managed it with great success. In addition to the extensive administrative work in his office as 1st Chairman, he was not too bad to do a lot of small jobs himself, be it painting a wall or replacing a switch.

He also initiated, designed and implemented a number of large projects in a leading role. Let us remind you of the last project, the renovation of our clubhouse in 2005 and 2006. He planned and worked for this for years. Eight weeks ago the inauguration of our new rooms was a proud day for him.

He sacrificed many hours of his life for the club - no, gladly did. Our association - his association - as it is today, has been shaped by him. We, the members, thank him for this.

Wolfgang Tauchert has rendered outstanding services to the Duisburg Yacht Club.

We mourn with his wife Ingrid, his children Stephanie and Sebastian, his parents and relatives.

Not only our 1st Chairman, but also a friend for many members is dead.

We will keep a grateful and honorable memory of Wolfgang Tauchert.

The members, the president and the board of the

Duisburg Yacht Club e. V.
