The Rostock Dr. Malte Philipp (36) was appointed national coach and sports coach coordinator in the field of Olympic sailing. He is to do construction work in a new Olympic base to be created.
One of the main pillars on which the medal hopes of those in charge of the DSV for the upcoming games are based is the work of young talent. From the beginning of 2005, two Olympic training centers will be set up in Kiel and Warnemünde, which will not only offer the active people better training opportunities, but will also provide living space and courses suitable for sports.
The DSV wants to bring together three to four D-ranks, i.e. newcomers to the Olympic field, per Olympic class.
In addition, all classes are no longer to be promoted equally, but rather based on performance.
Rostock Malte Philipp was hired to coordinate these tasks. The sailor and sports scientist was previously the national coach of the Turkish Olympic sailing team. Philipp about his new job: "A difficult but solvable task."
The national coach considers it unlikely that the new youth concept will lead to countable results as early as 2008: "The expectation of success for 2008 should not be raised too high. My goal is to build up sustainable performance. And that takes time."
As before, the Olympic Sailing Committee (OSA), which has also been newly appointed, is superordinate to it. The chairman is the 1984 silver medalist in the Starboot, the Hamburg entrepreneur Achim Griese.
The YACHT spoke with DSV President Dierk Thomsen and OSA Chairman Achim Griese about the future of Olympic sailing in Germany and how a failure like the one in Athens should be prevented in the future. You can read the detailed interview in issue 25/04, which will be published on November 1st.
