The "Arthur crowd", for the last time on the DGzRS slipway

Yesterday, Tuesday morning, an unspectacular rescue and shipbuilding work of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) in Bremen came to an end. With the decommissioning of the “Arthur Menge”, the last boat of the 9-meter class and thus the last unit of the first generation of lifeboats left the DGzRS fleet.

After 29 years in the maritime search and rescue service at the Langballigau and Schleswig stations on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, the storm-tested lifeboat has been technically and visually overhauled and will soon embark on a long sea voyage to Montevideo in Uruguay. Here, at the beginning of next year, the "Arthur Quantity" will be transferred to the fleet of the local rescue service ADES (Asociaciòn honoride Salvamentos Maritimos y Fluviales) under the new name "ADES 18 Hamburg Sud".

This closes a chapter in the technical history of the German sea rescue organization. From 1972 to 1981, the DGzRS put a total of 22 lifeboats in the so-called 12, 9 and 7 meter classes into service especially for use in shallow water areas and near the beach. All these proven DGzRS units have been replaced by more modern and more powerful boats in recent years. Their predecessors are now employed by foreign rescue services or are owned by museums or private owners. Only the “Siegfried Boysen” and the “Eduard Nebelthau” of the 12-meter class are still used as training boats for the DGzRS for training purposes.
