"Trossenschlag", "Luvgierigkeit", or "Schamfilen" - the confrontation with this foreign language as part of their geography course would probably never have been dreamed of by the students of senior teacher Carsten Thiel.
Thiel, born in Flensburg, himself a passionate sailor and longtime sailing instructor, has once again started a geographic and sporting excursion to the far north on the Baltic Sea. "After my job ended up in the gem town of Idar-Oberstein, the longing for the coast drove me to the far north by the sea, year after year," said Thiel. Accordingly, the sports, geography and English teacher not only spend a large part of their holidays on the water, but are also often drawn to the North or Baltic Sea during their activities in the context of school projects.
The starting point this year was a YACHT Youngsters starter package for a sailing project week. It had to be quick this year. A few Internet research and phone calls later, the "Heinzenwiesler" and the Skipper sailing school in Niendorf / Baltic Sea were in agreement. After experience with numerous sailing schools, this is a step that you have not regretted and, in connection with the Hamburg children's home as inexpensive accommodation, an option that is worth recommending.
The students were confronted by their teacher with the necessary theoretical knowledge in the deep "inland" after the afternoon lessons. In addition to the elaborate sailing theory, the geographical facts of the excursion area were prepared there and rounded off by concluding lectures in the classroom or directly in the coastal region.
With a trial weekend at the nearby Bostalsee in Saarland, where initial experience was gained on the "wobbly dinghies" of the S. A. L. T Yacht School, the troops should ultimately be prepared for the "rough coastal conditions" of the Baltic Sea.
Early in the morning at 3 a.m. in the last week of the school year we went north in minibuses. Niendorf on the Baltic Sea, conveniently located in terms of transport and also geographically interesting with its surroundings, was the declared goal. After a brief introduction and the quick move into the accommodation located directly near the beach, the "dreaded" Baltic Sea was already waiting in the afternoon, but it was extremely warm and peaceful for the country rats from the jewelery city.
So it didn't deter anyone that a member of the "Yacht Youngsters" got to know the harbor basin after a competent and humorous briefing by the "Supervisor" Jürgen when setting sail for the first time. Since hot July also arrived in the far north, the Heinzenwiesler stayed for a week with mostly light to moderate winds and a Baltic Sea that invites you to jump into the cool water.
The "young ordinary seamen" were carefully introduced to Wende, Halse, Aufschießer and Co. The competent and always eager sailing instructors, above all boss Thomas and his "adjutant" Jürgen, were even able to organize several smaller, attractive sailing trips to the Bay of Lübeck and a highly competitive final regatt with a subsequent award ceremony.
After two extremely short nights - some young sailing instructors and the approaching exam took part of the crew around the clock - after a week that had gone far too quickly, the theoretical and practical exam finally came up. They all mastered this hurdle with confidence, so that the freshly baked fur seals, freed from the stress of the exam, plunged into the Baltic Sea again before the long journey home. Tired but proud of what they had achieved, the group reached Idar-Oberstein late in the evening. Thiel regretted that the limited time and this year's rape beetle plague on the mainland only allowed a few geographical short lectures, e.g. on the Brodten cliffs. Nevertheless, the group got together every evening for joint activities in Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf and the surrounding area
The "small final" of the soccer World Cup Germany - Portugal was followed with enthusiasm on the big screen during an evening excursion to Travemünde in front of the backdrop of the Maritime. Great atmosphere and a great experience for the students from the "Schinderhannes region".
The two teachers and the Skipper sailing school hope to have brought some young people closer to the wide range of sailing and the multifaceted landscape along the Bay of Lübeck with this excursion. Some even wanted to go on a multi-week Caribbean cruise straight away. Everyone confirmed in unison that this hopefully should not have been the last excursion of this kind and that the YACHT certainly provided great support. Such sponsorship will always be seen as an initial spark for every school. For this we would like to thank you very much again.
