Special boat: "Eye of the Wind"
A hundred years ago the ship's name "Friedrich" was still on her hull, and she was rigged as a topsail schooner. It followed many years as a cargo ship. Over time, her sails were trimmed. She suffered damage and she almost ended up in the ship graveyard prematurely.
The rescue of the "Eye of the Wind" took place in the mid-seventies. Sailors discovered the completely dilapidated ship, which in the meantime had changed name and owner several times. An extensive restoration and long trips around the world followed.
Finally, in the early 1980s, Hollywood became aware of the ship, which had meanwhile been rigged as a brig. It played supporting and even leading roles in several films. On board were Brooke Shields, Tommy Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges, among others.
Today the ship, renamed “Eye of the Wind”, sails for a personnel management training company and also in normal berth charter operations. Before the proud windjammer heads for Elsfleth at the beginning of May to celebrate the big anniversary, we went on board to let the adventurous and eventful story tell us - read now in the new YACHT (issue 6/2011, available in newsagents from Wednesday).
