
Research ship "Beagle" in front of Tierra del Fuego
A special exhibition on the museum ship "Rickmer Rickmers" in Hamburg will show watercolors and oil paintings by the well-known marine painter Hans Peter Jürgens from March 30th to May 20th. The exhibits include paintings of the "Beagle" with Charles Darwin on board, as well as fishing trawlers in heavy seas and various lighthouses.
Born in Cuxhaven in 1924, the son of a captain who is not only a painter, but also a seaman and shipping historian, knows his way around the seas of this world. On the "Priwall" he circled South America and spent the Second World War on the freighter "Erlangen". As a prisoner of war, he lived in SierrLeone, Scotland and Canada for five years. In 1953 he finally acquired the captain's license and from 1960 worked as a pilot on the Kiel Canal.
The paintings by the now over 80-year-old, who became known through a large number of exhibitions, are now in various German shipping museums as well as in private collections. Art lovers will find some of his works over the next two months at the following address:
